Preventing Falls

Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older, but can become more common and harder to recover from as we age. In Scotland more than 18 000 older people are admitted to hospital after a fall each year, and falls are the most common reason for an ambulance being called to an older person (NHS Inform)

Keeping active is one of the best ways to prevent falls.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CHP) have created this short video showing some simple strength and balance exercises that can be done at home to help prevent falls.

Tailored exercise programmes

Live Life Well Aberdeenshire can support individuals who are inactive to become active through our exercise referral programme.

Winter Walking

Walking like a penguin can reduce the chances of slipping and falling when it's icy underfoot.

How to walk like a penguin:

  • Short steady steps.
  • Lean forward slightly, keeping your tummy and back strong.
  • Keep your hands free, arms by your side.
  • Wear supportive shoes with good grip.
  • Walk slowly with knees slightly bent.
