Meet Surfer Aidan Innes

My name is Aidan and I am 14 years old. I love sport and keeping fit. My passions are surfing and boxing, I surf every opportunity I can and I am now in the Scottish Junior Development Squad.  I’m so proud to be doing this for my county.

What inspired you to take up your sport?

The local surf club were doing taster sessions at Broch beach and I tried it and absolutely loved it!

Which club did you start your sporting journey with?

Broch Surf club

What has been your biggest challenge in your sporting journey, and how did you overcome this?

My biggest challenge has probably been the end of last year I was injured while out surfing and my back was injured for many months. I was quite upset that I couldn’t work out or do many of the other sports I loved at the time.

I’m much better now and had many physio sessions and workouts to help me get better and stronger.

What are your goals for the coming year?

I want to improve my surfing and my boxing and become fitter healthier and stronger.

What does your training programme involve, and does this impact on other areas of your life?

I train many hours a week and  I can miss out on some things due to this.  Which can be a pain but if you want to get better you need to work hard.

What skills do you have that have helped you succeed in your sport?

I swam with the swimming club which was a great benefit and made me strong for paddling out in big waves. I now work out with the Broch amateur boxing club to keep me fit in other ways.

How many competitions do you plan to compete in?

There are 4 possibly 5 competitions this year in the Junior Series.

How do you deal with setbacks in your sport, whilst training or competing?

I look at what went wrong and try to see how I can improve. No point being angry or upset that doesn’t solve anything.

Who is your biggest inspiration from the world of sport?

Italo Ferrera cause he’s an awesome surfer.

What is your greatest achievement in your sport?

Getting into the Squad!

What helps you to stay motivated and focused during your training?

I have always enjoyed training. I don’t see it as a chore, so I’m happy to train.

What advice would you give to others just starting out in any sport?

Never give up and trust the process.

How will your Talented Athlete Pass help you develop and hone your skills as an athlete?

I want to build up more strength and would like to get back to introducing more gym time and swimming into my weekly training.

Is there anywhere people could find more information about your upcoming sporting activity? (Facebook, Website / Twitter)
