Meet Triathlete Euan Murphy

I currently a member of the Triathlon Scotland performance academy. I compete in the British Super Series representing Scotland. I also compete in cross triathlon and will be aiming to become an elite athlete in this area of cross triathlon.

What inspired you to take up your sport?

My mother and father have competed, and I wanted to try it. I have been a completive swimmer since I was 7 years old and I have always loved cycling, especially MTB so I wanted to try triathlons.

Which club did you start your sporting journey with?

Trythan Triathlon club, Ythan Cycle Club, Ythan Swimming Club.

What has been your biggest challenge in your sporting journey, and how did you overcome this?

I have always run for fun but I needed to improve to meet the standards for triathlon. I joined a running club to help me with this and now enjoy run training too.

What are your goals for the coming year?

To reach the European and World Championships for cross triathlon.

What does your training programme involve, and does this impact on other areas of your life?

I currently have to manage my training hours around my school study as I am in S5. I currently do 12 to 15 hours of training a week. The training consists of 6 hours of swimming, 3 hours of running, 3 hours of cycling plus a bit extra if I can fit it in.

What skills do you have that have helped you succeed in your sport?

I have good bike handling skills which helps me with my cross triathlon.

How many competitions do you plan to compete in?

Six BSS triathlons.

How do you deal with setbacks in your sport, whilst training or competing?

I am quite resilient and try to build upon and reflect on things that have gone wrong.

Who is your biggest inspiration from the world of sport?

The Brownlie Brothers

What is your greatest achievement in your sport?

Being part of the 2 time Scottish Champions Relay team with my fellow Trythan team mates.

What helps you to stay motivated and focussed during your training?

My goals.

What advice would you give to others just starting out in any sport?

Only compare yourself with your past self.

How will your Talented Athlete Pass help you develop and hone your skills as an athlete?

It will give me more opportunities to train out with my normal club activities.
