Meet Basketball Player Rory Martin

I'm Rory Martin and I live in Westhill.  I play basketball and represented Scotland at under 14 in 2023 and 2024.

What inspired you to take up your sport?

I thought it looked cool so I asked for hoop for my birthday.  I enjoyed practicing skills in my garden so I joined a team.

Which club did you start your sporting journey with?

Portlethen Panthers.

What has been your biggest challenge in your sporting journey, and how did you overcome this?

I tore a ligament in my ankle and was out injured for 8 weeks in the middle of the season.  I got exercises from a physiotherapist but I just had to be patient and let it heal as well.

What are your goals for the coming year?

My goals are to get selected for the U15 Scotland Team and get a trial for the GB Team.

What does your training programme involve, and does this impact on other areas of your life?

I play for U16 and U18 at Aberdeen Basketball Club so I have team training 4 times a week and two games each weekend.  I also do strength and conditioning twice a week at RGU Sport.

What skills do you have that have helped you succeed in your sport?

Lots of physical coordination skills for ball handling.  I play as Point Guard so I'm trusted to take the ball up the court on offence. I need a good handle so I can keep my head up and focus on making the right pass for the offence.

How many competitions do you plan to compete in?

I compete in the Scottish National League U16 and U18.  If I get selected for Scotland I'll play in the Four nations tournament in Manchester in June against England, Ireland and Wales.

How do you deal with setbacks in your sport, whilst training or competing?

I just keep going and try to keep staying consistent.

Who is your biggest inspiration from the world of sport?

I really like Kyrie Irving.

What is your greatest achievement in your sport?

Representing my country.

What helps you to stay motivated and focused during your training?

I just love training.  I love the game and want to get better.

What advice would you give to others just starting out in any sport?

Do what you enjoy but put the work in.

How will your Talented Athlete Pass help you develop and hone your skills as an athlete?

It means I can get more time practicing my shots on court.  Some of my team mates in Aberdeen play for Scotland too so we could do extra training together.  I would also like to use the gym to maintain my strength and conditioning in the off-season.

Is there anywhere people could find more information about your upcoming sporting activity? (Facebook, Website / Twitter)
